Sean McCauley, age 17, joins Chief Warrant Officer 5 Mark Shumway, the New York Army National Guard command chief warrant officer, and Chief Warrant Officer 5 Michael Zanghi, age 60, in cutting the National Guard birthday cake during a ceremony marking the 378th anniversary of the National Guard on Dec. 13, 2023 at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham, New York, McCauley, who enlisted in July and was the youngest Guardsman present, represented the future of the National Guard, while Zanghi, who retires in February 2024 represented the history and traditions of the Guard. Shumway served as the presiding officer for the ceremony.

The MAC1 provides a combat focused marksmanship sustainment training event and competition for all the states in New England and New York. These matches are the second priority in the Chief of the National Guard Bureaus guidance for sustainment training events. PLUM ISLAND --New York National Guard Soldiers and Airmen of the 24th Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team (CST) and 106th Rescue Wing prepare to identify and classify several hazardous chemical and biological materials during a collective training event at the Plum Island Animal Disease Research Facility New York May 2 2018. The CST insterted by helicopter and was responsible for establishing communications and mission command for the event which brought together the resources of several fire departments the 106th Air Rescue Wing and the Department of Homeland Security to respond to a simulated containment breach at the research facility.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo directed the National Guard to deploy personnel to Washington County May 5 to assist local emergency responders with tree and debris removal. National Guard personnel are prepared to assist additional storm impacted areas as necessary. The Governor also issued an update on the severe storms that moved through the eastern portion of upstate New York on Friday, May 4. Lawerence Flynn a former Adjutant General who died on Nov. 12 2017 during his burial ceremony at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on November 17th 2017. In 1986 Maj. Gen. Flynn was appointed by Governor Mario Cuomo as the Adjutant General and Commander of the New York Army National Guard where he served until his retirement in June 1992.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Nearly 200 volunteers from the New York Army and Air National Guard participated in pregame ceremonies at the NFL Buffalo Bills' Salute to Service home game Sunday November 27. The Soldiers and Airmen helped unfurl a large flag for the national anthem and helped escort Bills players onto the field for the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Participants stayed to watch the Bills defeat the Jags 28-21.

Over 100 people attended the ceremony, which was held on DMNA grounds near the New York Military Forces Memorial (right). The memorial depicts an inverted rifle and bayonet with helmet displayed inside a pair of combat boots, most often referred to as a battlefield cross.

STILLWATER--Saratoga Battlefield historian and retired Park Ranger Larry Arnold discusses the importance of terrain during the Battle of Freemans Farm in 1777 to Soldiers of the Judge Advocate General Corps from the New York Army National Guard and Army Reserves 7th Legal Operations Detachment on March 12 2016 at the Saratoga National Historical Park in Stillwater N.Y. Arnold is a licensed battlefield tour guide and led the group of 18 legal Soldiers through British and American positions discussing the history of the battlefield and introducing the Soldiers to judge advocate staff challenges related to the laws of land warfare in that era and of the issues of Soldier discipline on the revolutionary battlefield. The troops marched about six miles through the battlefield as part of the training.

ALBANY--Maj. Gen. Anthony German, the commander of the New York Air National Guard, and the Assistant Adjutant General of New York, has been selected as the 53rd adjutant general of New York by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. He replaces Maj. Gen. Patrick Murphy who will become Director of Plans, Policy, and International Affairs for the National Guard Bureau.

NEW YORK--A New York National Guard Soldier and Airman assigned to Joint Task Force Empire Shield keep an eye on the crowd coming and going in New York Citys Pennsylvania Station Amtrak terminal on Tuesday Dec. 23 2014. The two are part of the New York National Guards 500-member State Active Duty force that assists the Metropolitan Transit Authority Police Department the Bridge and Port Authority Police Department and the Amtrak Police at New York Citys airports and key transit terminals. The uniformed National Guard members do not have arrest authority but provide additional eyes and assist police when requested.

Some 200 runners participated in the event. SARATOGA SPRINGS--James Gandy, librarian for the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs N.Y., holds the 150-year old diary kept by Confederate Army lieutenant James Malbone. Malbone wrote parts of the diary in a homemade code to keep private information about military movements, his sex life, and his musings about the possibility that Varina Davis the wife of Confederate President Jefferson Davis was of African-American ancestry. Malbone's code was recently broken by Queens College associate professor Kent Boklan a former National Security Agency-trained code breaker.

Warren Jones, Rochester, N.Y. Marksmanship training and competition has long been a key component of National Guard training. The modern TAG Match requires participants to employ the weapons used on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. The match consists of eight timed events that include the use of those weapons during close-quarters combat, casualty, and nuclear biological chemical (NBC) drills. About 125 New York National Guard troops from across the state took part in the match.

New York Guard Staff Sgt. Joseph Dee fires an M-9 pistol during the 35th Annual "TAG (The Adjutant General) Match at Camp Smith on May 31. Dee and about 125 New York National Guard members are taking part in the match, testing their marksmanship skills with weapons like the M-16 rifle, M-9 pistol and M-249 light machine gun. Along with 25 TAG Matches, Dee has competed on the state, national and international level, taking part in shooting matches in Canada and England. He’s double-distinguished in rifle and pistol, and has earned the National Guard Chief’s 50 Marksmanship Badge three times: once in the rifle category and twice in the sniper category.

Jeff Dorvee announces that the the Oakland Raiders picked Mississippi State football player Gabe Jackson as the 81st draft pick in the 2014 National Football League Draft on Friday, May 9. Dorvee, a member of the 1427th Transportation company is the New York Army National Guard's 2014 Active Guard and Reserve NCO of the Year. Dorvee was one of 15 servicemembers who took turns announcing draft picks during the first round of the draft conducted at Radio City Music Hall.

ORISKANY, N.Y. - More than 600 National Guardsmen from three states completed a five-day disaster exercise at the New York State Preparedness Training Center here May 2, and now serve as the new Region 2 Homeland Response Force (HRF). The exercise tested all the capabilities of the HRF, which is made up of National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from New York, New Jersey and Puerto Rico. In the days leading up to the final evaluation, HRF troops -- suited up in full protective suits, masks, boots and helmets -- located mock victims in a simulated disaster site, decontaminated them, treated their injuries and evacuated them for further treatment.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Capital Region G.I. Joe collector Tearle Ashby and fellow action figure enthusiasts display hundreds of vintage to recent G.I. Joe action figures here at the New York State Military Museum as part of the program to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of G.I. Joe. Ashby also led a discussion about the origins of the toy's development from Hasbro. The action figure, first unveiled to toy buyers at the 1964 Toy Fair in New York City, led to decades of child's play with the 12" and later 3 3/4" figures. Portions of Ashby's collection has been on display at the museum since December 2012 as part of the "Toys and Tanks" exhibit, due to come down in March 2013.

Happy Birthday to the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Corps! Warrant Officers trace their lineage to July 9, 1918 when Congress established the Army Mine Planter Service as part of the Coastal Artillery Corps. A total of 40 Warrant Officers were authorized to serve as masters, mates, chief engineers, and assistant engineers on each mine planting vessel in an Army War Department Bulletin less than two weeks later on July 22, 1918. Although only one rank of Warrant Officer was authorized by Congress, in effect, three grades were created because of their varying levels of pay authorized for masters, 1st mates, 2nd mates, and marine engineer personnel. The Army created the distinctive insignia of the Warrant Officer in May 1921. The insignia of the Warrant Officer Corps consisted of an eagle rising with wings displayed, adapted from the great seal of the United States. The eagle is standing on two arrows, which symbolize the military arts and sciences for which Warrant Officers draw their specialties. Warrant Officers of the Army Tank Corps were the first to wear this new insignia. Today’s Warrant Officers are the Army’s specialists in a variety of fields, including artillery, military intelligence, aviation, maintenance, medical, logistics and administration. WATERVLIET-- Major General Patrick Murphy, the Adjutant General of New York joined Watervliet Arsenal Commander Col. Mark Migaleddi in saluting the Capital District's commitment to supporting the arsenal at an Army Community Covenant event on Tuesday, June 11. The Watervliet Arsenal, which was founded in 1813 to provide supplies for American forces fighting the British on the New York frontier in the War of 1812, is celebrating its 200th year in July. The New York National Guard has more than 300 military and civilian employees stationed at the arsenal including the Army National Guard's military personnel office, central issue facility, medical command and recruiting command.

Aikey has managed the museum since its creation more than a decade ago.The museum houses over 10,000 artifacts dating from the Revolutionary War to Iraq and Afghanistan that relate to New York State’s military forces, the state’s military history and the contributions of New York’s veterans.

ALBANY--Members of the New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force pose with members of community anti-drug coalition groups at the conclusion of week-long training session conduction at Division of Military and Naval Affairs headquarters on March 7. The Soldiers and Airmen are part of a 14-member Civil Operations team tasked to work with community anti-drug programs to help them function more affectively. The training was conducted by Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, a group established in 1992. The training focused conducting community assessments, collecting data and conducting problem analysis. The training is designed to help both military personnel and civilian anti-drug group employees determine the root causes of substance abuse in communities.The training covered the first week of the three week CADCA National Academy program. The training was sponsored by the New York State Office of Alcholism and Substance abuse services.

LATHAM, N.Y. - Members of the New York National Guard Joint Force Headquarters observed the National Days of Remembrance here April 10 to remember the Holocaust. Soldiers and Airmen attended the Holocaust “Days of Remembrance” and viewed videos provided by the Holocaust Museum. The videos, including topics such as “Why we remember the Holocaust” and “Heeding the Warning Signs,” examine the events of 1938 and the impact they had on individuals targeted by Nazi persecution. The program provided an opportunity for reflection and discussion on the Holocaust 75 years later. The intent was to challenge members to consider their own response to warning signs of genocide today, said Master Sgt. Donna Torres, the JFHQ Equal Opportunity Specialist and a coordinator for the program. Choices in response to hatred truly matter, Torres explained and together we can help fulfill the promise of “Never Again.”

LATHAM-- The National Guard of the United States turns 375 Years old today,Dec. 13. On this day in 1636 the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony passed a law establishing formal militia companies in the colony. These companies were made up of all adult males older than 16 and were expected to meet and train in military skills regularly.In New York, the first citizen-soldiers were members of the Burgher Guard, organized by the Dutch East Indian Company in 1640 to help protect New Amsterdam from their English neighbors in Massachusetts and Virginia or from hostile natives. Citizen soldiers of the militia and National Guard have fought in all of America’s wars from King Philips War against Native Americans in the New England Colonies in 1675 to the struggle in Afghanistan today.

LATHAM Damian Stager (left), Gabe Reinhart (right front) and 25 other children from the Cohoes Community Center joined military kids from the Capital District area to honor past and future hero’s and support each other, Nov 11. The kids spent time creating "Hero Packs" which will be given to children of Soldiers deploying overseas to say thank you to the families of service members for their sacrifice. The packs include a letter from a local non-military child expressing their appreciation for the recipients’ loved ones service and the families sacrifice. A letter writing kit composed of stationary, stamps and pen pal information is included so the military child can communicate with their Soldier or other kids.

LATHAM-- Bobsledder Justin Olsen, who won a Gold Medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics as a member of a four-man bobsled team, takes the oath of enlistment into the New York Army National Guard at Division of Military and Naval Affairs headquarters here on Thursday, January 6. LATHAM--Allan Attwell, President of the Capital District Chapter of the Battle of the Bulge Veterans thanks Major General Patrick Murphy, the Adjutant General, for speaking to his group on Thursday, Dec. 16, the 66th anniversary of the start of that major World War II battle. The Battle of the Bulge was the largest battle in the history of the U.S. Army and several New York National Guard units including the 258th, 991st, 186th and 187th and the 955th Field Artillery Battalions and the 801st and 802nd Tank Destroyer Battalions fought in the Ardennes Campaign in world War II. Mr. Attwell served as an infantryman with the 28th Infantry Division’s 109th Infantry Regiment.

LATHAM -- Major General Patrick Murphy, the Adjutant General of New York, presents the Honor Guard of the Year Award to Spec. Jarad Fatigate, a member of the 1569th Transportation Company who lives in Sherman, Conn. The award, dedicated to the memory of Sgt. David Rostum, an Honor Guard member who was killed in action while serving in Iraq with the 2nd Battalion 108th Infantry, requires members to demonstrate proficiency in funeral detail duties, the manual of arms, and physical fitness, and to pass a board exam on general military and military funeral procedures. Honor Guard members from across the state compete for the honor. Spec. Alisha Somma, a member of the 466th Area Support Medical Company from Waterford, NY was the first runner-up while Spec. Robert Jayne, a member of the 204th Engineer Battalion from Maine, NY was the second runner-up. The New York Military Forces Honor Guard provides funeral services at almost 10,000 funerals for eligible veterans annually and a New York Honor Guard Team won first place at this year’s National Guard honor guard competition.

LATHAM-- New York Army National Guard PFC George Wade, at 19-years old the youngest Soldier present, and 92-year old John Sidur, a New York Army National Guard veteran of the World War II battles of Okinawa and Saipan, cut the National Guard Birthday Cake on Monday, Dec. 13, during a ceremony at Division of Military and Naval Affairs headquarters here. Traditionally the oldest Soldier and youngest Soldier join in cutting the birthday cake. Wade, a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade joined the National Guard in 2009. Sidur enlisted in 1940 shortly before the National Guard was mobilized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and served for five years.

ALBANY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT--Members of the New York Military Forces Honor Guard carry the remains of United States Army Air Forces 1st Lt. Ray Fletcher from a plane to a waiting hearse Wednesday, Aug. 18 during an honorable transfer of remains ceremony here. Fletcher and three others were killed in 1944 when the B-25 medium bomber he was piloting crashed into a mountainside on the Mediterranian Island of Corsica. His remains were finally recovered in 1995 and identified in 2009. Fletcher will be interred in Essex Junction, Vermont.

SHELTER ISLAND--The flag-covered casket of New York Army National Guard 1st Lt. Joseph Theinert is borne from Our Lady of the Isle Church on Shelter Island, NY before his family, members of the community and military leaders by the New York National Guard Military Forces Honor Guard on Friday, June 11. Theinert was serving on active duty with the Army’s 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan when he was killed in action by an Improvised Explosive Device on June 4. He was assigned to Troop B, 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry and was age 24 at the time of his death. Brigadier General Patrick Murphy, The Adjutant General of New York and State Command Sergeant Major Robert Van Pelt were among other members of the New York Army National Guard and other services who attended the funeral. More than 2,000 people attended an out door funeral mass. Theinert was the first service member from the community to be killed in action since World War II.

RANDALLS ISLAND, New York - A member of the reconnaissance section of the 24th Civil Support Team, New York National Guard based at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn takes air samples from a simulated clandestine lab. It was part of an evaluated exercise on June 8 at the New York Fire Department Training Academy at Randalls Island, New York City. As part of the scenario, the 24th was called to a notional crime scene where federal and local law enforcement authorities believed that terrorists may have been creating a chemical or biological agent for use in future attack. The 24th responded to the call and quickly moved to the site, linked with the civil authorities at the scene and went to work to determine the extent and nature of the threat. Army evaluators tested the unit’s abilities through situation injects throughout the day-long exercise.

ALBANY--A World War II-era M-8 armored car is manuevered into position by its owner, vehicle collector Greg Wolanin, as the centerpiece of a New York State Museum exhibit honoring the service of New York Army National Guard Soldiers. The 101st Cavalry Group of the New York NationalGuard operated M-8s during their service in Europe in 1945. The exhibit, titled "Citizen Soldier" opens on May 28 and will run through March 2011.

LATHAM-- Major General Joseph Taluto, the Adjutant General of New York and the oldest Soldier in Joint Forces Headquarters--New York, joins Pvt. 1st Class Joshua Loiselle, age 19, the younger Soldier, in cutting the cake marking the 373rd Birthday of the National Guard on Dec. 13. Loiselle, of Watervliet, drills with the 42nd Special Troops Battalion, and currently works in the headquarters on special duty. On Dec. 13 1636 the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colonie passed a law organizing the colonial militia into regiments. This is considered to be the start of organized militias in the United States which evolved into the modern National Guard.

Wreaths are laid on each president's grave on the anniversary of their birth. Van Buren, who was born, lived and died in Kinderhook, was nicknamed "Old Kinderhook" by political supporters. Reportedly he signed approved paperwork with an "OK" which evolved into OK as a phrase indicating that things are good.

LATHAM--Texas artist Phil Taylor embraces Vicki DiMura, mother of New York Army National Guard Sgt. David Fisher who was killed in Iraq in 2004, during a portrait presentation ceremony Friday, Nov. 13 at New York Division of Military and Naval Affairs headquarters here. Taylor paints portraits of fallen American Soldiers and presents them to family members through the American Fallen Soldier Project. Fisher a member of D. Company 101st Cavalry, assigned to the 1st Battalion 69th Infantry, was killed when his humvee rolled over on Dec. 1, 2004. DiMura now works for the New York Army National Guard's Yellow Ribbon Reintegration program.

NEW YORK-- The New York Army National Guard Color Guard leads a contingent from Joint Forces Headquarters--New York up Fifth Avenue during the annual Veterans Day Parade Wednesday, Nov. 11 in New York City. More than 1,500 members of the New York Army National Guard, including the famouse "Fighting 69th", the 1st Battalion 69th Infantry, the 1st Battalion 258th Field Artillery and the 369th Sustainment Brigade, which earned the nickname "Harlem Hellfighters" in World War I. Members of the New York Air National Guart also participated. The Color Guard presented the flag during the opening ceremony of the New York Knicks game Wednesday night while Staff Sgt. Brooke Leavitt sang the National Anthem.

The site has been equipped with a rubble pile which simulates a hospital collapsed in a 5.9 Richter earthquake. MENANDS, NY-A New York Army National Guard Color Guard joins Civil War reenactors and members of the Patriot Guard, in honoring Civil War Soldier 1st Sgt. William Francis, a member of the famed 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first Black unit to fight in the Union Army. Local Civil War historians identified Francis' unmarked grave at historic Albany Rural Cemetery and arranged for the Veterans Administration to provide a new stone to mark his final resting place. Francis, who enlisted as a private, served throughout the Civil War, including the 54th's assault on Fort Wagner, South Carolina, made famous in the 1989 movie "Glory".

SARATOGA NATIONAL CEMETERY, Schuylerville -- New York National Guard State Chaplain (Col.) Eric Olsen says a few last words over a coffin containing the remains of an unknown New York Soldier who was buried 147 years to the day after he died at the Battle of Antietam on Sept. 17, 1862. The Soldiers remains were discovered by a hiker in 2008 and turned over to the New York State Division of Military of Naval Affairs by the National Park Service, and returned to New York to be buried.

COLONIE, NY--Runners set out on the 2nd Annual New York National Guard Family Readiness Council, Inc. 5K Fundraising run, Saturday June 20 at Colonie Crossings Park, near Albany. Almost 200 runners participated in the event, which raises money to be used to aid National Guard Soldiers and Airmen and their families during deployment emergencies. The 1st race in 2008 raised almost $11,000. This year's race was won by New York Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Jonathan Peck,a member ofthe 109th Airlift Wing. He finished with a time of 18 minutes and 48 seconds. This was the first of two fundraising races set for this summer. On June 27 a second 5K fundraiser will be held at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, the home of the 105th Airlift Wing.

LATHAM-- Members of the Army and Air National Guard, New York Naval Militia and the New York Guard participate in the Joint Staff Training Course at Joint Forces Headquarters on Wednesday, May 20. Seventy-five New York military force members are now certified by Northern Command to conduct joint operations. The Army and Air National Guard, New York Naval Militia and New York Guard members completed an eight-month on-line and resident course training, culminating with a two-day face to face joint staff training exercise on May 20 at the Latham, NY headquarters. The Joint Staff Training Course enables participants to better execute domestic operations and work with local first responders in a Joint Task Force. Joint Task Force staffs will practice these newly trained skills during a large scale disaster preparedness exercise called Vigilant Guard later this year. The November exercise in Buffalo, will enable the Joint Task Force to oversee roughly 2,000 members of the National Guard, New York state and local first responders and provide a full range of flexible and adaptable, command and control capabilities for emergency response operations in order to protect, defend and assist the citizens of New York State.

In his remarks the Governor thanked the Soldiers for their service in Afghanistan and promised that the National Guard and other state agencies are there to help them if needed. More than 700 Soldiers, spouses and family members met at Rochester's Riverside Convention Center to take part in the Reintegration program's 30-Day event. A similar event will be held on Feb.28- March 1 at the Sagamore in Bolton Landing, and in Tarrytown, N.Y., on March 6-7. The event is designed to help Soldiers and their families determine the "new normal" after returning from a combat zone. Army National Guard Lt. Col. Matthew H. Cooper (left) turned over command of the 22-member joint unit to Air National Guard Major Rich Nunziato after holding the job for four years. The 2nd CST is trained to detect biological, chemical or radiological agents, identify them, and provide the information to civilian or military responders in the event of an attack. Nunziato is the forth commander for the unit, which served at Ground Zero following the 9/11 attacks and regularly conducts support missions in New York and other states. LATHAM- Chief Warrent Officer David Tiffany explains the function of the New York National Guard's Joint Incident Site Communications Capability system to a videographer for Albany Channel 6 during a press conference held Thursday, Jan. 8 at Division of Military and Naval Affairs headquarters. Tiffany and nine other New York Army National Guard Soldiers will deploy the system to Washington in support of the District of Columbia National Guard during the inaguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. Members of the Capital Region media were given the opportunity to see how the high-tech communication system functions and ask questions of Tiffany and two other Guardsmen.

COHOES, N.Y. - Mission Complete! Aviation Soldiers from the New York National Guard's headquarters in Latham volunteered to unload holiday care packages at the Cohoes Post Office on Dec. 2. The care packages were supplied by local civic and veteran organizations for New York Army National Guard Aviation Soldiers deployed to Iraq.

40 Members of the Army National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters and R.S.P. (Recruit Sustainment Program) recieve an orientation flight on a New York Air National Guard C-130 aircraft, 12 April, 2008. The aircrew, members of the 109th Airlift Wing, familiarized the soldiers with flight procedures and operations. The round-trip flight passed over the Whiteface Mountains and Burlington Vermont before returning to Latham, NY.

The number 88 NASCAR driven by Dale Earnhart, Jr., the new NASCAR driver for the National Guard, makes a debut at the Division of Military and Naval Affairs drill shed floor Jan. 28 in Latham, N.Y. The New York Army National Guard?s Recruiting and Retention Command, Area 3, will have the race car on display at Upstate New York central region area towns of Stamford, Oneonta and Sidney Center until the end of January, 2008.
