Fallen Army Guard Officer Honored

SHELTER ISLAND--The flag-covered casket of New York Army National Guard 1st Lt. Joseph Theinert is borne from Our Lady of the Isle Church on Shelter Island, NY before his family, members of the community and military leaders by the New York National Guard Military Forces Honor Guard on Friday, June 11.
Theinert was serving on active duty with the Army’s 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan when he was killed in action by an Improvised Explosive Device on June 4. He was assigned to Troop B, 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry and was age 24 at the time of his death.
Brigadier General Patrick Murphy, The Adjutant General of New York and State Command Sergeant Major Robert Van Pelt were among other members of the New York Army National Guard and other services who attended the funeral. More than 2,000 people attended an out door funeral mass.
Theinert was the first service member from the community to be killed in action since World War II.
