The National Guard turns 383 on Friday Dec. 13.
That's the date in 1636 when the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony voted to organize the colony's militia into three permanent regiments. Today these are the oldest in the country.
New York can trace it's first militia back to the Burger Guard formed by the Dutch East Indian Company on Manhattan in the 1640s.
