New York Guard members Memorialized

SLEEPY HOLLOW-- This Memorial Stone in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery memorializes 40 members of the New York Guard who died during the world wide influenza epedimic in 1918 while on duty guarding the New York City water system. The stone was hewn from the aqueduct quarry in upstate New York by the members of the First Provisional Regiment and placed at a site purchased by William Rockefeller for the burial of those members of the Regiment that were homeless or did not otherwise have a place to be buried. PVT Frank DeCosta, New York Guard is buried there.
