55th Regiment, New York National Guard

The following is taken from New York in the War of the Rebellion, 3rd ed. Frederick Phisterer. Albany: J. B. Lyon Company, 1912.

This regiment, not in existence now, but then located in New York city, entered the United States service for three years as the 55th Volunteers; on its consolidation with the 38th Volunteers in 1862, it was reorganized as a State organization.

June 18, 1863, this organization, (seven companies) commanded by Col. Eugene Le Gal, was ordered to Harrisburg, Pa., to serve thirty days; it left the State June 24, 1863, and served in the 2d Separate Brigade, Middle Department, 8th Corps, and was mustered out of service at New York city July 27, 1863.
