This exhibition (New York State Capitol, June 2014 - May 2015) honors the sacrifices made by New Yorkers in 1864 and 1865, the final years of the Civil War, by showcasing several flags heroically carried on the battlefield by New York regiments and one flag mournfully flown by a loyal central New York family during the war’s climatic conclusion. The battle flags inspired the soldiers, including new African-American volunteers, to prove their mettle and to continue their allegiance to the Union and the abolition of slavery. Culminating Colors recognizes the courageous and diverse soldiers from the Empire State who rallied around their flags and reveals the sentiments of the men and women responsible for creating the beloved banners.
